Civil Justice Reform

Families work hard to scrape funds together for health care, college tuition, and retirement. If they’re fortunate, maybe they can save for a special family vacation and a lifetime of memories.

But unscrupulous lawyers are clogging our courts with lawsuits that force American families to pay an estimated $3,000 to $4,000 per year for goods and services.

The Florida Faith and Freedom Coalition supports assignment of benefits (AOB) medical malpractice, and workers’ compensation reform. We will continue to support common sense legislation to keep money in the hands of Florida’s families and out of the pockets of scammers and fraudsters.

The most frequent types of lawsuit abuse involve fraudulent or inappropriate recruitment of plaintiffs, foreign claims, leveraging government investigations and actions, aggregate litigation, and seeking third-party litigation financing.

Unfortunately, our judicial system includes many incentives for this type of behavior. Only serious civil justice reform at the federal and state levels can prevent the kind of economic damage done by such frivolous lawsuits.

Smaller businesses and their employees receive the brunt of this fraudulent behavior. It is they who pay the greatest percentage of their revenues toward tort costs. As a result, these businesses have less money to create new jobs and compensate employees with bonuses, raises and benefits.
